Take yourself back to the Edwardian period with this faceted blue glass stone set under an oval filigree floral cover. This is a brass, possibly gold gilt, setting. The brooch has been taken well care of since the early 1900's, as best as I determine based on the styling, clasp and patina. I did lightly clean it taking off a little of the patina, so you could see the delicate carving on the oval base and the two large flowers. The tassels are all intact with little sphere details on the ends. The brooch measures 1 3/4" across and 2 3/4" long. The long pin is intact and fits the c-clasp tightly; it will not come undone when worn as many older brooches do after they lose their spring.

About Vintage Jewelry

Vintage jewelry comes in many styles and ages. The standard industry definition of vintage is 20 or more years old, antique, 100 years. In my store I do my best to limit my collection to the 1900s or before. I say do my best, because it's not always simple to know what year something was created.
Many pieces are marked with the maker's hallmark, and you can research them by when the company was in business and in some cases with existing databases. Unmarked pieces are more difficult; you need to rely on attributes, appearance and condition. Such attributes as the length of the pin, stye of the clasp, texture of the back, type of stringing material, assembly techniques and other markings.
Most of my collection seems to center on the mid-century period, the 1940s through 1960s. Which makes sense because that's when many American costume jewelers were thriving, especially out of Rhode Island!
One of the things to consider when choosing a piece of older jewelry for yourself or as a gift, is condition. Vintage jewelry most likely will inherently have some degree of visible wear or patina. It is normal and considered part of the appeal and charm.
But what outshines condition, is how a piece makes you feel. Jewelry is very personal; and can carry memories and stories from one generation to the next. My hope is that when you choose pieces from my collection, you will create new memories with them and allow them to hold your stories next...

Cleaning Instructions

Many pieces of vintage jewelry, especially rhinestone settings are glued in place.  Unless you can clearly see that all the stones are set with prongs do not soak your vintage jewelry. If you have pearl or porous stone jewelry, do not soak.
IF IN DOUBT, DO NOT SOAK!
The only time I have ever soaked anything was when it was a non-precious metal with no stones. On precious metal I choose to use the appropriate cleaning cloth. I stay away from chemicals unless absolutely necessary.
It is important to clean your jewelry after you wear it. Continued build-up of body oil, lotion, perfume and debris can accumulate and harm vintage jewelry. It can eventually form verdigris, a green corrosion that can literally spread to other pieces. If you see a green hued dirt on your vintage piece, immediately separate it from other jewelry until it can be properly cleaned.
So what do you do? For normal daily cleaning all you need is lukewarm water, a soft toothbrush and a dry cloth. Be sure to thoroughly dry your jewelry after brushing with the water.
Sparingly, for more difficult jobs (except on pearls and porous materials) I use a soft toothbrush and 80% to 90% alcohol.  Because alcohol has solvent properties you cannot let it sit or pool. Lightly spray the alcohol on the toothbrush and gently clean the grime from your jewelry. I use alcohol because it evaporates quickly, and as I said before, all jewelry must be thoroughly dry before you store it.
For pearls or porous stones (opal, turquoise, bone, etc.) gently wipe them with a soft cloth and lukewarm water, (not with alcohol) and then dry. If you have specific questions, please contact me.
